ParticipantI have a 2020 BMW R1250GS and can not get the OBD2 dongle to send data / be displayed on DMD/T865x tablet
SETUP and SETTINGS
T865X tabletCI BMW Control hub with the extra 4 Button switch for throttle housing.
all buttons including BMW wonder wheel/control are working and correctly programmed.
on the OBD Scanner M1
Green light on for power
blue light on for Bluetoothon the DMD unit
app page /settings /
Connected devices:
BMW_CMDI
Saved devices
DMD OBD M1 (initially showed connected for handshake then dropped to “saved devices”)
OBD page
blue circle for Bluetooth
select settings gear above the blue Bluetooth symbol
Select ELM 327 Bluetooth device
DMD OBD M1
(Note: tried the BMW_CMDI it didn’t send any engine data or wasn’t displayed so I bought the OBD dongle)
OBD protocol is set to auto
PROBLEM:
the DMD tablet is not reading or displaying any data at all from the OBD dongle,
I would have thought the DMD software would have picked up the engine data from the BMW control hub since the data is there for a BMW NAV VI, but it didn’t, and now I’ve got nothing from the OBD dongle being displayed either.
Ive disconnected and connected over a dozen times with no change in results.
do I have something set up incorrectly? Missing something? Others with same results?
what’s the trick or fix?
how do I get this to work?

KeymasterIt should work indeed.
In DMD2 app – OBD Settings – Select the DMD M1 dongle and that is it. No further change should be required.
The only common reasons for OBD dongles not to work is if there is another OBD device connected in the system at the same time or if there is another device (phone or tablet) using the dongle at the same time.DMD2 Project Manager & Lead Developer

ParticipantNothing else connected, I’ve even performed the reset on the OBD dongle and ensured nothing else was connected or in the “saved item” field except the current connect BMW control module.
any chance it’s a faulty OBD dongle? I’ve been all through the setting looking for hidden fields that could be looking for a different input, but from your reply it should be pretty simple…
next step?
Thank you!
I’m very happy with the setup, it solves a lot of challenges for me that every other solution failed, just hope to get the OBD sensor resolved.

ParticipantMoved the OBD Dongle over to a 2024 BMW R1250RS, same results, I get a good connection, the Bluetooth symbol on the OBD page turns blue, but no data displayed. Confirmed I have the OBD dongle selected as source and I do.
unsure what to do next, out of ideas….
its either something I’m not selecting, or the OBD dongle itself is faulty?

ParticipantDid you get this working? Having issues with a 1300 GSA.

ParticipantI have not got it working yet.
i took the bike to a shop yesterday to run a full diagnostic of the OBD port to see if there was a fault code or something in the bike was blocking the data flow, either a failed port or something in the bikes “brain”. Everything checked out so it’s not a bike issue.
What I think the issue could be…. And need to test it next.
its possible(?) when they tested the OBD dongle compatibility with BMW models, they did not have the CI BMW control module installed and blue tooth connected.
i think the CI BMW control hub is blocking data flow on the OBD dongle by either:
1) tying up valuable bluetooth “bandwidth” that prevents the OBD dongle from being able to send data over Bluetooth
2) I connected the CI BMW control hub first so it’s sitting in “position 1”, maybe the OBD dongle needs to sit in position 1, get it working THEN connect the CI BMW control hub, see if it kicks the OBD dongle off line
3) the BMW can bus makes all bike data (similar to OBD data) available in the NAV prep connect point, it’s possible that the DMD2 app sees this as an OBD 2 connection and therefore sees the OBD 2 dongle as a redundant OBD path and ignores it. Unfortunately DMD2 doesn’t seem to process bike data from the CI BMW control hub, even though it’s selectable as a source… of at least I couldn’t get it working in that configuration. My Nav VI displayed it it just fine AND I ran a chiggee AIO 5 BMW for a bit (really liked that and I use it on my other BMWs, but I wanted a true NAV platform for the GS not just a phone repeater) and it read the data just fine as well, so I know it can be done, the DMD2 app just doesn’t read it.
Next step….
I’m going to “forget” the pairing to the CI BMW control hub, and connect to the OBD dongle as a single Bluetooth pairing and see what that does. If it works, then I will try and connect to the CI BMW control hub next, maybe connecting in that order solves the issue..
if it works but I can not use my CI BMW control hub and it becomes one or the other, I will use the CI BMW controller as having buttons and whiz wheel function is more important than the OBD data since the TFT on the BMW is so good.
By the way, ADV TIM has been a great help! Thank you for your help and ideas!
I’m kind of reluctant to forget the pairing to the CI BMW control hub, as getting that all connected and switches programmed was a little fiddelsome, but I’ve come this far, might as well take final steps….
Anyone else crack the code yet?

ParticipantInteresting, I have the BMW CI controller as well. Only the power and BT lights illuminate and no data.
I’d be interested in how you have programmed the buttons. The CI interface is a dumpster fire.

ParticipantI think the CI controller works well to integrate the BMW whiz wheel and the 4 buttons set (extra buttons) but I think it is blocking OBD data somehow. I’m going to run a few more configurations as a test to sort it out, but I do think it’s the CI BMW controller in the mix blocking data flow, maybe it’s a Bluetooth hog?
to reassign button functions:
DMD settings (DMD APP bottom tray gear)
4th blue line item:
Remote Control Settings
set up remote controller
Then setup: (each category can be configured)
Global
menu dialog and apps
home view
map view
road book view
advanced
the extra 4 buttons are from top to bottom
1 = 22
2 = 21
3 = 19
4 = 20
the Whiz wheel
Rotate up think zoom in = 29
Rotate down think zoom out 111
right toggle (inboard) = 66
left toggle (outboard) = 30

ParticipantOh I see what you mean. I thought you were referring to something in the CI controller app. I do need to go through that config within DMD2, thanks for the info
