I wasn’t planning on buying a dedicated sim card and cell service just to run the Google maps app on the tablet.

If I end up having to tho, after installing the sim card in the back of the tablet, will the tablet walk you thru the rest of the setup procedure for it?

Another option is setting up your phone as a WiFi hotspot and linking the tablet to the phone for Internet. I am testing this out now. It appears to work much better than using Bluetooth hotspot which I could not get to work reliably.

    Thanks.
I did manage to get the Bluetooth tether working.

I’ve always been confused with how the WiFi works tho. When I think WiFi, I’m thinking about the signal coming from my desktop PCs router.

But I guess WiFi is just another radio band, like Bluetooth, that the phone itself is able to transmit on.

In order to try to tether the tablet to the phone via WiFi, I’ll need to disable my PCs router Wifi to be sure its the phones Wifi the tablet is getting and not the routers. I’ll play with that today.

I did manage to get my phones mobile hotspot WiFi working with the tablet today. Set it up on the 5G band. Speedtest shows 62mbs which I don’t think is too shabby. Should be plenty for running Google maps for navigation, and then some.

Tip, 2.5 G uses less battery.

I thought about that. I’m going to set it up on 2.4G to gauge the difference in speed, data throughput and such compared to 5G.

I think the 2.4G WiFi will be fast enough since we were using Google on 3G networks. So the 2.4G and 4G/5G cell network combined is faster than 3G. I would test it out with Google. I have tested it with DMD2 and Kurviger and both worked okay. Just remember if the cell tower connection is spotty then the Internet will be spotty, nothing to be done about that though.

I have a very strong dislike for Google Maps at the moment. I only find it useful for finding stuff. Then I transpose the GPS coordinates into DMD2 / Kurviger for routing.

I hear ya. I’ve found myself in a dead zone and lost all navigation with Google maps and just had to wing it until I got it back.

Same here, plus some other oddities, like insisting on being shrink down to a little on screen box.
