I can read in other forums too: with Android Auto, other issues and problems will come with. Some time ago, I decided (only for me) by using  an extra (cheap) device to protect my expensive SmartPhone, will only shift problems to another level. But problems are still there. AND: the Andriod Auto is only a kind of mirror! Means, if somthing bad (lost/stolen, out of battery) happens with your Smartphone – the “thump mirror” is out of order too. You can’t any longer navigate (ok, no risc if you are just on highways) – and I believe it’s not possible to phone with (to call rescue).

For me, it wasn’t a solution – it was only shifting problems. Therefore I bought a DMD device.  I’m travelling yearly up to 15.000 Km also offroad, and it’s still allive. And in case of accidents or crashes, I can use my phone as it was designed for: call rescue. And I have a spare navigation tool… 🙂

May be, for Sunday’s afternoon ride, a Carplay or Android Auto device will be good enough.

It much depends on the device. I have been using an “original” Ricoel device for two years now. I use it on my camper van and on my V-Strom. Light offroad (what people call fire roads I think, suitable for a V-Strom 650) and about 10000 km per year. It is mounted above the V-Strom instrument cluster, behind the windscreen. Not the best spot, as it vibrates quite a lot ( mounted twice my phone in the same spot and I had to give up, I could not see much due to the shaking when going off-road). I had one pin in the pogo mount fail on the unit, but besides that, I am very satisfied with the setup. When it failed, I just powered the unit through the USB port. I was able to replace the pogo mount easily for I think 10 or 15 euros.

I love that it just works, on all occasions – long rides or everyday transportation. On long rides, I keep my phone in the tank bag or on a wireless charger on the handlebar. On everyday rides, the phone is in my pocket. Works with gloves, the screen is large, and everything that I need is available while riding without any hassle. This is what I love about it – it is very simple and rather dependable. I do carry a spare phone with me when going on long rides, so if the device fails, I can still use my phone(s). If one of the phones fails, I still have the second one that works flawlessly with the Android Auto unit.

To be honest, my greatest concern is that Google will change stuff at one point in Android Auto and will break the compatibility with my Ricoel unit. That is why I do not do updates on my phone while on long rides. Not sure if Rocoel people will ever bother to fix it if happens, and I am sure they will not do it immediately.
